Some thoughts on SHRM19 by state council director Sheila Mennenga
If you've never been to the SHRM Annual Conference, I recommend adding this event to your "HR bucket list"! Whether it's the keynote speakers, from Martha Stewart to Blake Mycoskie, fabulous entertainment such as Lionel Richie, to the over 200 concurrent sessions, the SHRM Annual Conference has something for everyone.
As an HR department of one (DOO), I especially enjoyed the concurrent sessions designed just for DOO's and whether your new to HR or have been "doing HR" for many years (I'll be celebrating 25 years in HR in 2020), I promise you that you'll be able to take away something from this conference that will help you in your daily life.
Another highlight for me was keynote speaker Blake Mycoskie. As the founder of TOMS shoes, Blake shared his story about how a chance encounter with some individuals in a bar in Argentina led him to develop his dream of providing shoes to children who couldn't afford them, and today over 60 million pairs of shoes have been given to children in need...all because one man didn't give up on his idea. It reminded me that, although sometimes HR is hard, we are making a difference in the lives of our employees and that is why I choose not to give up on the good that we do each and every day!!!! (And BTW...I bought my first pair of TOMS shoes at the conference in the HR Bookstore and I love them, especially knowing that another child will be getting a pair of shoes because of my purchase!!!).
So add the SHRM Annual Conference to your HR bucket list. Next year's conference will be held in San Diego June 28 - July 1.
